PROJECT OPPOSED BY LOCALS

Dennis Fernandes, former president of Citizen Committee of Loliem (CCL), who had successfully thwarted the government’s move to set up the IIT Goa campus on the Bhagwati Plateau, accused Comunidade members of being hell-bent on destroying the plateau for their personal greed.
“Comunidade lands are held for the benefit of the entire village. Any attempt by the Comunidade to alienate these highly eco-sensitve and sacred lands will be defeated by the ‘Rakhondars’ of our village,” he said.

PROJECT OPPOSED BY LOCALS
PROJECT SUPPORTED & APPROVED BY AUTHORITIES
DETAILS OF THIS PROJECT - by Mr Swapnesh Sherlekar
According to the notification, eight application files have been received by Loliem-Polem Comunidade from M/s Mallikarjun Multi-Fruits Processing Producers Co Ltd (MMFPPCL) for allotment of a total of 1 lakh sqm of land without formalities like auction, etc in survey number 358/1 to set up different types of fruits processing units.
Each of the files have specified the required area of land and the type of processing units to be set up: 10,000 sqm of land for construction of jackfruit processing unit, 10,000 sqm of land for construction of coconut processing unit, 10,000 sqm of land for construction of turmeric processing unit, 10,000 sqm for construction of mango processing unit, 13,765 sqm of land for construction of agro cashew processing unit, 30,000 sqm of land for construction of agro dairy farming unit, 10,000 sqm of land for banana plantation and processing unit, and 6,235 sqm of land for construction of Kokam processing unit.
WHY WE OPPOSE / YOU MUST OPPOSE THIS PROJECT ?
This Is Not Small-Scale Farming
The project includes:-
8 large processing units
Nearly 25 acres of land
Year-round industrial activity
Even though the 8 units are described as “agro” or “processing” , this Plateau land is ecologically sensitive, crucial for groundwater recharge, grazing, and biodiversity.
This is industrialisation disguised as agriculture.
ONCE THE PLEATEAU IS GONE, IT WILL BE GONE FOREVER
Say NO to destructive development.
Protect Our Plateau. Protect Our Village.
This project threatens:
Our water
Our land
Our livelihoods
Our environment
Our future generations
Plateaus Are NOT Wastelands
Laterite plateaus are fragile ecosystems that:
Recharge wells, springs, and streams
Support grazing, medicinal plants, birds, insects, and wildlife
Protect villages below from flooding and erosion
Once destroyed, plateaus cannot be restored.
Threat to Water Security
Plateaus act like a natural sponge for rainwater.
This project will involve:
Large buildings, roads, and concrete surfaces
Borewells and high daily water use (especially the dairy unit)
Blocking natural rainwater percolation
Result: Drying of wells, springs, and streams in surrounding villages.
Industrial Pollution Risks
Processing units and dairy farming produce:
Wastewater, slurry, organic waste
Cleaning chemicals and oils
Bad odour, flies, and disease risk
Plateau soil cannot safely absorb this waste, leading to groundwater and stream pollution.
Loss of Biodiversity
Plateaus are home to:
Birds, reptiles, amphibians
Seasonal grasses and rare plants
Construction, fencing, lighting, and traffic will:
Destroy habitats
Break wildlife movement routes
Permanently drive species away
Soil Erosion & Flooding
Laterite soil is shallow and fragile.
Land cutting and leveling will cause:
Severe erosion during monsoons
Mud and silt flowing into fields and streams
Increased flooding in low-lying areas
